Where to Stay & Getting Around

Choosing the right base saves time and stress. Wulingyuan is best for most visitors; downtown suits Tianmen-focused trips. Here's the full picture.

1. Wulingyuan (Best for Forest Park)

Closest to the Forest Park east gate. Xibu Street has restaurants, bars, and evening atmosphere. Hotels and guesthouses at all price points. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season (Apr–May, Sep–Nov). Morning cloud sea? Stay here and enter early.

2. Forest Park Gate Area

Near the west gate (Forest Park entrance). Ideal for Golden Whip Stream and Huangshi Village routes. Some lodges within walking distance of the gate. Quieter than Wulingyuan.

3. Downtown Zhangjiajie

Convenient for Tianmen Mountain (starts from downtown), early flights, and trains. ~40 min to Forest Park. Cheaper than Wulingyuan. Good if you're doing Tianmen first or have a late arrival.

4. On the Mountain

Limited guesthouses at Tianzi and Yuanjiajie. Sunrise and cloud sea views, but basic facilities. Book months ahead for holidays. Not recommended for first-time visitors—logistics are trickier.

5. Airport & Station Transport

Hehua Airport → Wulingyuan: Taxi ~¥100–120 (30 km). Shuttle bus ~¥20–30.
Zhangjiajie West Station → Wulingyuan: Taxi or bus ~30–40 min.
Airport → Downtown: 5 km, ~¥15–20.

6. In-Park Transport

Shuttle buses: Free. Connect all gates and main routes.
Bailong Elevator: ¥65. Fast way up to Yuanjiajie. Saves ~2 hr hiking.
Tianzi Mountain cable car: ¥72.
Ten-Mile Gallery train: ¥30 one-way. Optional; you can walk.

7. Booking Tips

Trip.com, Agoda, Booking.com accept international cards. Some local hotels prefer WeChat/Alipay—confirm payment methods when booking. Carry cash as backup.

Stay in Wulingyuan, enter early, and you'll make the most of the Avatar peaks.
