Zhangjiajie has something to offer in every season. Autumn is peak; spring, summer, and winter each have their charm. Here's when to go—and when to avoid.
1. Autumn (Sep–Nov) — Best Time
Clear skies, autumn colors, cloud sea. Mid-to-late October: red leaves on the peaks are stunning. Temps 15–25°C. Peak season—book accommodation and tickets 2–4 weeks ahead.
2. Spring (Apr–May)
Mild, mountain flowers. Fewer crowds than summer. June is shoulder season—fewer tourists, temps 25–28°C. Nearly as good as autumn.
3. Summer (Jul–Aug)
Greenest scenery; mountains stay cool. But very crowded—overlaps with Chinese school holidays. Enter early in the morning.
4. Winter (Dec–Feb)
Snow, fewer tourists, lower prices. Some cable cars may close for maintenance—check ahead.
5. Avoid
Chinese National Day (Oct 1), Labor Day (May 1)—extremely crowded. Lunar New Year holiday too. Prefer shoulder season and weekdays when possible.
Pick the right season and your Zhangjiajie trip will be complete.
