Traveling to China for the first time? Here's what you need to know before visiting Zhangjiajie.
1. Visa
US, UK, EU citizens typically need a Chinese visa. Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy/consulate. Allow 1–2 weeks. Some airports (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, etc.) offer 144-hour visa-free transit when you're transiting through China to a third country—check if your itinerary qualifies. Bring passport, onward tickets, hotel bookings.
2. Payment: Alipay & WeChat Pay
Cash is less common. Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate. For international visitors: download Alipay (international version) and link via TourCard or supported Visa/Mastercard. WeChat Pay has limited international card support. Set up before you go. Carry ¥500–1000 cash as backup.
3. SIM & Internet
Roaming works but can be expensive. Buy a China SIM at the airport or in town. Unicom/China Mobile have tourist plans. Hotels and many spots have WiFi. Some Western sites (Google, etc.) may be blocked—consider a VPN if needed.
4. Transport & Tickets
Book trains on Trip.com (accepts international cards; recommended for overseas visitors). 12306 is China's official site but usually requires a Chinese phone number. For park tickets, use Trip.com. Tianmen Mountain and Glass Bridge require advance time-slot booking.
5. Language
English is limited. Download a translation app before you go—Pleco (Chinese dictionary) works offline; Google Translate needs offline packs downloaded in advance (Google may be restricted in China). Key spots may have English signs. Consider hiring an English-speaking guide for the parks.
Plan ahead, and you'll have a smooth trip. Zhangjiajie is worth it!
